CAM Designs Announces First Quarter Results For Fiscal 1998.

COVENTRY, U.K./NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 21, 1997--CAM Designs Inc. (Nasdaq: CMDA) reported a net loss for the first quarter of fiscal 1998 of $516,891, or $0.24 per share, compared to earnings of $343,171, or $0.13 per share, for the comparable year-earlier period. The current year's figures include costs of approximately $500,000 in connection with the recently announced re-alignment of the Company's operating groups.

Net sales totaled $7.2 million for the quarter ended August 31, 1997, a 35.5% increase over the $5.3 million recorded in the year-earlier period. Revenues benefited from increased sales activity in MGA Development, the Company's automotive engineering group, and from the acquisition in the fourth fiscal quarter of Ruecker International, which specializes in placing automotive engineers and designers throughout the world. As previously disclosed, the Company has experienced substantial cost overruns on two key projects during fiscal 1997 and the effect of these projects is still being experienced, primarily on the expense side.

Commenting on the results, John R. Davidson, President and Chief Executive Officer of CAM Designs, stated, "While we were not happy with the loss in the first quarter, we are pleased the operating re-alignment has been completed. We were negotiating during the quarter with the labor unions involved in certain areas that we have either downsized or eliminated outright and this proved to be a major distraction for all the parties involved during the process. We estimate that, excluding the re-alignment cost of approximately $500,000, the Company would have posted a pre-tax operating loss of about $100,000. We further estimate that the reduction in CAM Designs' fixed cost base, as a result of the closure of the sheetmetal department and the downsizing of the model shop to be approximately $1.5 million annually.
