juncture, Caltrans officials have begun reviewing options -- including construction of an elevated two-lane connector between the southbound 405 and the northbound 101.

While officials said it's still early in the process, some of the five options currently being studied could affect nearby homes or take out part of the Sepulveda Basin wildlife refuge wildlife refuge, haven or sanctuary for animals; an area of land or of land and water set aside and maintained, usually by government or private organization, for the preservation and protection of one or more species of wildlife. .

Caltrans will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. today in Encino to solicit public comments and concerns that will be studied in an environmental impact report. The report should be completed in early 2007.

``There's not a lot of detail because we're looking at alternatives, which are just proposals at this point,'' said Caltrans spokeswoman Judy Gish.

``We want community feedback so we can arrive at consensus.''

The connection between two freeways is now just one lane and often backs up on the 405. There are five alternatives being considered, including an option to leave the connector as it is.

Residents in the area are concerned that Caltrans may pursue options that could require residential properties near the 101.

Andy Spilkoman has lived in his Sherman Oaks home for a dozen years and, even though it's still early in the process, he wonders how he could afford the homes and property taxes in his community if he were forced to move.

``I don't want to lose my house. It is 2006, time to realize the cars will always outnumber the roads,'' he said.
