CALTRANS, CHP AWAIT NEW FACILITY THEY'LL SHARE TRANSIT HUB.

GLENDALE - The towering building taking shape near the interchange of the Ventura and Glendale freeways The Glendale Freeway is a minor freeway in the Los Angeles, California, USA, metropolitan area. It runs from Glendale Boulevard in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles to Foothill Boulevard in La CaƱada Flintridge. Throughout its length, it is signed as California State Route 2.  should be complete at this time next year as a new $46 million transportation management hub.

 co-located with Caltrans along with state-of-the-art equipment and systems will equal increased coordination and quicker response time,'' Caltrans spokeswoman Deborah Harris said. ``This will assist in increasing mobility for motorists.'' All radio calls to the California Highway Patrol's southern division will be dispatched from the new building and the center will also receive all 911 cellular phone calls in Los Angeles County.

``The building that they're in now cannot accommodate all of the Caltrans personnel and the building is old,'' said project coordinator Officer Mark Firkins of the CHP. ``It's like a dungeon Dungeon - Zork  in there. There's no windows and it's very cramped. This is going to give all of our communications operators and dispatch some breathing room.''

The building will also house the California Highway Patrol and Caltrans Freeway Service Patrol A freeway service patrol, alternatively known as a motorist assistance patrol, roadway service patrol, or a courtesy patrol, is the umbrella term for a variety of programs implemented by government agencies, typically state Highway Patrols or Departments of  - a network of 140 tow trucks that operate on the freeways in the mornings and afternoons and provide free assistance to motorists who have run out of gas or got a flat tire. The program is coordinated among the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the CHP and Caltrans.

The new center is larger than the current location with more screens for the observation of closed-circuit cameras located on the freeways.

The center normally includes message center, transmitting, and receiving facilities. Also called COMCEN.
