Advanced Transportation Consortium Wins Innovative

Transportation Project Award for

``Clean Mobility Center'' Concept, Implementation

CALSTART, the advanced transportation technologies consortium, was honored today with the South Coast Air Quality Management District's Clean Air Award for innovative transportation projects. The award was presented to CALSTART in recognition of its Clean Mobility Center "CityWheels" project at the Bikestation facility at the Long Beach Transit Mall Long Beach Transit Mall is a transit hub and a station on the Los Angeles County Metro Blue line. The Metro Blue Line station has an island platform, and is located on 1st Street between Long Beach Boulevard and Pacific Avenue in the city of Long Beach, California. . The award, which is given for outstanding use of a single alternative transportation mode, or of a comprehensive transportation strategy with demonstrable air quality benefits, will be shared with the Bikestation Coalition and Flexcar, partners with CALSTART in this innovative transit enhancing system.

The City Wheels facility, which opened April 19, 2002, is the first fully integrated Clean Mobility Center site in the nation. It extends the shared-vehicle concept by offering electric cars, electric bicycles, and Vespa-style electric scooters. Open since 1996, Bikestation Long Beach is one of three bike-transit centers operating in California. The purpose of the public facility is to provide convenient services that encourage bicycling and mode shifts to other clean forms of transportation including transit, walking, and vehicle-sharing.
