last Friday for the opening of the Eastern Sierra trout-fishing season were greeted by a Caltrans sign warning of very high winds ahead.

But Saturday, when the season opened an hour before sunrise, Mother Nature answered the pleas of thousands of anglers. The late winter storm that had been forecast for the weekend failed to materialize, and anglers enjoyed sunny weather and good fishing.

Crowley Lake Crowley Lake is a reservoir on the upper Owens River in southern Mono County, California in the United States. It was created in 1941 by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (DWP) as storage for the Los Angeles Aqueduct and for flood control.  Fish Camp manager Jeff Conaway Jeff Conaway (born October 5 1950, New York, New York, U.S.) is an American actor, known for his role as Kenickie in the 1978 motion picture musical Grease.

said about 8,000 anglers went through the gate over the weekend, down slightly from last year. Staff at local tackle shops also said business was a bit slower.

The wind kept Mammoth resident John Two Dogs up all night, so he decided to fish from the snow-covered shore of partially frozen Lower Twin Lake in Mammoth before going to work.

For many, the opening day of trout season is an annual event of longstanding.

Firefighter Dennis Hain of Thousand Oaks and his brother Richard caught limits of big fish early, using Crave bait spritzed with Gravy. It seemed bait anglers were doing slightly better than those using lures because the cold water temperature made the fish sluggish.

Department of Fish and Game biologist Curtis Milliron said anglers averaged 4.6 fish Saturday at Crowley. The average fish size was up slightly from 13 to 14 inches, with a quarter of all fish in the 1.5- to 2.5-pound category. Milliron attributed this to more holdover hold·o·ver

``Fish growth was good, the fish were healthy, and we expect a great season,'' Milliron said.

enforcement arm was out in full, with 22 wardens patrolling the Eastern Sierra. Art Lawrence, a DFG lieutenant, was in charge of operations on opening weekend and said wardens checked more than 3,000 anglers, found 230 violations and issued 70 tickets. Many were for fishing with barbed hooks in barbless-hook areas such as Hot Creek and the Crowley Lake tributaries, including Crooked and McGee creeks.

Seventeen anglers were cited for jumping the gun on the season and fishing Friday. Others were cited for not having a license, and two received tickets for catching fish with their hands despite the frigid water.

``It seemed like pressure was down from the last several years,'' said Lawrence, who attributed the decline to the forecasts of bad weather.

Some anglers covered their bets and brought both fishing tackle and skis, taking advantage of excellent winter-like ski conditions on the last weekend of full-lift operations at Mammoth Mountain.

``We had great skiing - over 80 inches of snow fell in April,'' Mammoth Mountain spokesperson Joani Lynch said.

The promised snowstorm finally moved into the Mammoth area Sunday night, and Monday morning those who hadn't remembered to bring tire chains were stuck watching the snow come down.

But those who took a chance on the weather Saturday were rewarded with fine fishing and many memories of the start of another trout season.
