45 National Guardsmen as they headed out Friday for final training before leaving for the Middle East.

The 756th Transportation Company's mostly middle-age soldiers shipped out in a charter bus for five weeks of training before they are deployed to an as-of-yet unknown Mideast location.

``It's an honor As a verb, to accept a bill of exchange, or to pay a note, check, or accepted bill, at maturity. To pay or to accept and pay, or, where a credit so engages, to purchase or discount a draft complying with the terms of the draft.  to show my son and my grandchildren that they have to do their part,'' said Specialist Walter Brady, 49, of Lancaster, who was out of the Army for 23 years before re-enlisting six days after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

``I have an obligation, a duty.'' he said. ``I knew when I said 'I do' that this day would come, but I still don't want to leave my family.

The transportation company's job will be to drive trucks hauling heavy equipment, including the Army's M1A1 Abrams tanks, which when not in combat travel on low-slung trailers for long-distance trips.

``It's hard leaving the kids behind. but on the other hand I'm doing this for my kids and their kids and I'm proud to do it,'' said Sgt. Joe Berlin, a 53-year-old Ventura County schoolteacher. ``I'm just thinking about what lies ahead, the unknown, what I'm going to be doing. but I will have the constant thought of my daughters in the back of my head.''

Berlin, whose daughters are 22 and 23, served two years on active duty in the Army and the past 18 years in the reserves. He worked as a 6th-grade teacher at Cole Middle School in east Lancaster for two years before deciding to escape the heat of the desert for the cool of a home a block away from the ocean.

``It's kind of funny that I can't stand the heat up here but now I'm being sent to a real desert,'' Berlin said. ``And there I can't wear shorts.''

Brady said goodbye to his wife, Juanita, 9-year-old son and four grandchildren whom they take care of.

``I feel sad but I feel proud at the same time,'' Juanita said. ``I don't want to see him go away from home and into harm's way harm's way

, but he has to protect and serve for all of us to continue to be free. I really never expected to see him going away with the military, though.''

Officials said they have no idea when the unit will be able to return home.

``Everyone here wants to go,'' said Sgt. Nicholas Anguiano, who has been in the military for 16 years. ``Everybody gets tired of training and never putting it to use, but now we are ready. Leaving your family behind, you hurt - but once you're there, you've got nothing but your mission on your mind. You've got a duty to do.''
