CALL TO KEEP DRINK-DRIVE LIMIT.

Byline: DEMELZA de BURCA

UP to 5,000 jobs will be lost if the Government lowers the limit for drink driving, the Vintners' Federation of Ireland Ireland, Irish Eire (âr`ə) [to it are related the poetic Erin and perhaps the Latin Hibernia], island, 32,598 sq mi (84,429 sq km), second largest of the British Isles.  warned yesterday.

The group said it is totally opposed to the lowering of the blood alcohol levels permissible per·mis·si·ble

Permitted; allowable: permissible tax deductions; permissible behavior in school.

per·mis
for drivers from 80mls to 50mls.

The Federation warned any reduction will have no effect on cutting road deaths and will lead to the loss of up to 5,000 jobs in rural areas.

It claimed it has been shown where road deaths are linked to drink driving, the blood alcohol level is often in excess of 150mls and not 80mls.

VFI's Padraig Cribben said: "This will do nothing to save lives. It will drive people to drink in the isolation of their homes with the associated social problems this brings. The real issue here is speed.

"It would appear that this is a smokescreen to cover up the nonimplementation of speed cameras."

Despite the protests Transport Minister Noel Dempsey Noel Dempsey (Irish: Nollaig Ó Díomasaigh; born 6 January, 1953) is a senior Irish Fianna Fáil politician. He is currently a Teachta Dála (TD) for Meath West and Minister for Transport & the Marine.  said he would be going ahead with the reduction in the drink-driving limit.

Mr Cribben added: "Any changes would be completely unnecessary and very unwelcome in the current climate."
