The series began in 1998 with the release of All-Star Baseball '99.  Game. He edged Palmdale's Jason Gorman (five), Camarillo's Joe Yingling (five) and Burroughs' Tommy Perez (four) on Saturday at Cal State Northridge, where it's 325 feet down the lines, 375 to the alleys and 400 to center.

The rules: Everything but a home run was an out, and each batter had 10 outs. The top three finishers from both teams then had another 10 outs.

``I was making sure I was taking good hacks every swing,'' said Caligiuri, who hit eight home runs and batted .474 in 83 at-bats for Camarillo this season. ``I definitely didn't get cheated. During the season I never went for home runs because if I did, I would have ended up just popping up.''

For his efforts, Cal State Los Angeles-bound Caligiuri was awarded Easton's newest prototype bat. His home runs - six in the first round and one more in the finals - helped his West team outhomer the East 16-12, thereby giving the West home-field advantage in the all-star game An all-star game is an exhibition game played by the best players in their sports league. The players are often chosen by a popular vote of fans of the sport and the game often occurs at the halfway point of the regular season, although this is not the case for some all-star games , where it beat the East 12-7.

Perez, who hit 12 home runs for Burroughs, caught fire at the end of his first-round turn, rocking three of four pitches over the wall at one point. But on Perez's second go, he failed to hit another.

``I knew I needed three, so I think I was trying a little bit too hard,'' Perez said.

Six players from each All-Star team participated - Perez, Gorman, Glendale's Ryan Noll, Saugus' Luke Miller, Highland's Traviss Hodge and Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill's Ryan West for the East, and Caligiuri, Yingling, Chaminade's Chris Martinez, Chatsworth's Tom Morefield, Kennedy's Jack Cassel Joseph Buren "Jack" Cassel (born August 8, 1980, in Northridge, California) is a Major League Baseball right-handed pitcher for the San Diego Padres.  and Crespi's Andy Campanella for the West.

Morefield had three home runs, Miller two, Hodge one.

Martinez, whose 20 home runs (in 102 at-bats) set a state record this season, failed to homer in his 10 swings. Noll, West and Campanella also were shut out.

Gorman had the most home runs in the second round with three. But he said the motivation of being the home team and maybe winning the Easton bat really wasn't so important.

``I did all right, but it was really just a fun thing,'' Gorman said.

Kennedy's Tim Arroyo and Westlake's Ryan Cope, who didn't compete in the derby, were the only players to hit home runs during the game.

Smaler of Harvard-Westlake pitched to both teams but couldn't last through both rounds after throwing more than 300 pitches. West coach Tom Meusborn relieved him for the last few contestants. ``They changed the rules on me - I didn't know they weren't going to count foul balls,'' Smaler said with a smile. ``But I'm hanging in there.
