CALIFORNIA TO TRY UNABOMB SUSPECT FIRST.

Byline: Knight-Ridder Tribune tribune, in ancient Rome, one of various officers. The history of the office of tribune is closely associated with the struggle of the plebs against the patrician class to achieve a more equitable position in the state. From c.508 B.C.  News Wire

The man accused of being the Unabomber will be tried for murder in California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  first, then in New Jersey, under a ruling handed down by a federal judge in Newark.

U.S. District Judge Dickinson R. Debevoise on Thursday denied a motion by lawyers for Theodore Kaczynski “Unabomber” redirects here. For other uses, see Unabomber (disambiguation).
Theodore John Kaczynski (born May 22, 1942), known as the Unabomber, is an American terrorist and social critic who carried out a campaign of bombings and mail bombings that killed

Kaczynski is scheduled to go on trial in Sacramento in the fall in four bombings that killed two and injured in·jure

two. Kaczynski had sought to have the Mosser charges included in the California trial - a move that was opposed by federal prosecutors.

In an 11-page ruling, Debevoise concluded that there were compelling reasons to hold a separate trial in New Jersey after the California prosecution concludes.

Among them, the judge said, was that the ``indictment indictment (ĭndīt`mənt), in criminal law, formal written accusation naming specific persons and crimes. Thus, he said, ``the New Jersey community has an interest in the case which . . . favors a trial'' in that state.

Debevoise repeated a decision he made earlier in the week that the California case should be tried first.

Prosecutors had argued that if the New Jersey case went to trial in the summer, it could be completed before a trial scheduled for November in Sacramento.

But Debevoise said that most of the work for the New Jersey case would be done as part of the preparation for the Sacramento trial. ``The most efficient procedure is to permit the California case to proceed on its present course,'' he said.
