, turned in a lap of 1:33.368 at 108.745 mph as time expired in the 15-minute qualifying session. Gollin, who lost the top spot twice in that time span, turned in a lap of 1:33.386 at 108.710 mph in his Lexus-powered Doran Racing entry.

It's the same car that won the pole here last fall in the season finale, and the same one that Pruett and Max Papis drove to the victory. Diaz replaced Papis in the Chip Ganassi lineup this season and drove the car to its 13th pole in 15 starts, but first in his career.

``I had traffic on the last lap, but the car was getting better and more balanced,'' said Diaz, a 27-year-old native of Mexico City. ``It was getting better with each lap. This series is so competitive, not only in the races but in qualifying.

``You just have to keep pushing it, even if you have traffic. Even if the car is not perfect, you have to keep pushing.''

Diaz, tied for 10th in the standings with Pruett behind Wayne Taylor and Max Angelelli, said his career got a boost with his first pole.

``This is very important to me,'' said Diaz, who drove in one Champ Car race in 2003. ``We couldn't get it at Homestead.

``The (third) turn will be very tight on the first lap,'' he said. ``I hope I can bring the car back in one piece to Scott.''

Gollin, who will co-drive with Matteo Bobbi, had the top lap early and rebounded from the fourth spot to the front before Diaz's last-second run.

``Every session we get better,'' said Gollin, whose Crown Royal Special Reserve team took second in the last race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
