CALIFORNIA FARM BUREAU REACTION TO NAFTA VOTE

SACRAMENTO, Calif., Nov. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- The following statement was released today by Bob L. Vice, president, California Farm Bureau Federation, on the House vote to approve NAFTA:
"The bell of free trade rings loud and clear across North America. California farmers know the benefits of having fair, unrestricted trade. We can compete with anyone if we are given free, unrestricted access to a market anywhere. The protectionists lost today, the people of North America won.
"As NAFTA goes into effect, we will watch closely to assure that all side agreements designed to protect American farmers during the transition period are enforced.
"California's farm exports to Mexico have tripled in the last five years. We foresee even greater increases as the tariffs and other restrictions come tumbling down.
"We urge the Senate to quickly join the House in approving NAFTA."
