CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME: THIS SATURDAY IS CALIFORNIA'S SECOND 'FREE FISHING DAY' OF 1992

CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME:

THIS SATURDAY IS CALIFORNIA'S SECOND 'FREE FISHING DAY' OF 1992
SACRAMENTO, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- The Department of Fish and Game is hanging out the "Gone Fishing" sign when it comes to checking anglers' fishing licenses this Saturday. That's because California is celebrating its second "free fishing day" of the year on Sept. 26.
The state held the year's first free fishing day on June 6.
On free fishing day, anyone in California can fish public waterways without a state-issued fishing license. This 24-hour window of opportunity is especially appealing to novice anglers, allowing them to first sample the sport without incurring the cost of a yearly fishing license.
But the following Sunday and thereafter, it is business as usual, cautions Fish and Game. Fishing without a license is a violation of Fish and Game Code, except on free fishing days.
The department issues approximately 2 million sport fishing licenses each year. With at least a thousand miles of marine coastline and hundreds of freshwater lakes and streams, the state offers an abundance of exciting angling opportunities. From pounding ocean surf to remote backcountry ponds, California anglers have some of the country's most varied fishing experiences to choose from.
This year, free fishing day coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day. Free fishing day and National Hunting and Fishing Day officially celebrate the sporting life, as well as pay tribute to historic contributions anglers and hunters have made over the years in the name of wildlife conservation.
