CALIFORNIA CUP: TIZBUD BEATS THE ODDS BC PICK-SIX WINNERS MAKE TRACK DEBUTS AT CAL CUP.

Byline: Kevin Modesti Staff Writer

ARCADIA - The two Breeders' Cup The Breeders' Cup World Championships is an annual series of Grade I thoroughbred horse races operated by Breeders' Cup Limited, a company formed in 1982 by a consortium of North American racing organizations, led by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.  pick-six millionaires from South Dakota South Dakota (dəkō`tə), state in the N central United States.  at the organizers' invitation, sat in on the track's handicapping seminar and laid out an $8 pick-six ticket for curious fans.

Graham Stone and Will Dixon, whose tiny $8 investment in last month's Breeders' Cup netted them a $2.6 million jackpot as the nation's lone perfect ticket-holders, succeeded this time only in demonstrating how exceptional that accomplishment had been.

At the California Cup, they went 0 for 6, confounded in part by Tizbud's victory at 10-1 odds in the $250,000 Cal Cup Classic and jockey Victor Espinoza's four-win day.

``I'm no smarter now than I was the last seven, eight years, when we lost every year,'' Stone, a pleasant 40-year-old from Rapid City, S.D., said on his first visit to an actual racetrack.

To be fair, Stone and his betting partner did no worse than the professional handicappers sharing the microphones, as Jim Quinn Jim Quinn (b. 1943) is a popular American conservative/libertarian radio talk show host based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His program, "The War Room with Quinn and Rose," is aired on 12 stations across the U.S.  and Tom Brohamer went winless on a joint $8 ticket. Somewhere, there were two perfect tickets, each paying $309,713. The pool was $1,108,000 on a day the track guaranteed $1 million.

The 14th Cal Cup, a 10-race, $1.325 million showcase for state-bred thoroughbreds, was rough on bettors who weren't fans of Tizbud's celebrity pedigree, or fans of Espinoza's riding and Harris Farms' breeding, or skeptics regarding Doug O'Neill's training.

It was Tizbud's second win, and first at the stakes level, in six starts.

said. ``He wants to grind along, a little like Tiznow.''

Commander's Flag was third in the Classic, as Hot Market finished sixth as a 7-5 favorite after Sky Jack was scratched with swelling in his right knee.

Nothing else went right for Sky Jack trainer O'Neill, the Oak Tree-meet record-setter. Saddling 11 horses in six Cal Cup races, he had no wins and two in-the-money finishes.

On an increasingly cloudy but dry day, 18,029 fans, the Cal Cup's smallest on-site crowd by far, saw Espinoza come within a win of Laffit Pincay's 2000 event record. Espinoza's other winners were Green Team ($13.20) in the Sprint, He's the Rage ($7.80) in the Juvenile, and Fade to Blue ($8.80) in the Starter Handicap.
