MOJAVE Mojave (mōhä`vē), river, c.100 mi (160 km) long, rising in the San Bernardino Mts., S Calif., and flowing generally north to disappear in the Mojave Desert.  - California California (kăl'ĭfôr`nyə), most populous state in the United States, located in the Far West; bordered by Oregon (N), Nevada and, across the Colorado River, Arizona (E), Mexico (S), and the Pacific Ocean (W).  City homeowners would have to pay as much as $200 a year per $100,000 of assessed valuation if school district trustees approve a special tax district to raise $11 million for construction of a local high school and elementary campus.

Those figures were disclosed during a Thursday night meeting in which Mojave Unified School District A unified school district is a school district which includes both primary school (kindergarten through middle school or junior high) and high school (grades 9-12). In Illinois, these districts are called unit school districts.  trustees unanimously approved the boundaries of the proposed tax district.

The boundaries were revised after Mojave residents objected to the inclusion of Mojave Airport and Cache Creek There are several places named Cache Creek.

``I really struggled with it. I almost made it a 4-1 (vote),'' said trustee Annette Edblad, who lives in Mojave. ``It just seemed to me that although I believe this is a house of cards house of cards

During the meeting, a district consultant estimated the tax could range from $50 to $200 per $100,000 of assessed valuation.

The board will hold a public hearing Nov. 28 on the proposed tax district and take a vote on whether to approve it.

``People who have property can voice whatever opinion they have,'' said board member Wayne Dickerson.

The district has until mid-December to decide whether to schedule a March 13 election asking California City voters to approve the property tax.

The district also wants to attempt passage of a districtwide parcel tax to raise money to match state aid to modernize mod·ern·ize

local schools, most of them in Mojave.

California City residents have long desired a local high school to spare students daily bus trips to and from Mojave High School, about 15 miles away.

But Mojave residents fear a California City campus could result in the closure of Mojave High, which now draws about 65 percent to 70 percent of its 565 students from California City.

A survey of residents in the spring of 1999 indicated the community of Mojave would not support taxes to build schools in California City, district officials said.
