CALIFORNIA BOWL: COC COULD BE NO. 1.

Byline: Ross Siler Staff Writer

VALENCIA - The publisher of the JC Grid-Wire junior college football rankings said Wednesday night that College of the Canyons College of the Canyons is one of the fastest-growing community colleges in the state. According to the National Junior College Research Association, College of the Canyons consistently ranks in the top 50 community colleges in the nation.  would receive strong consideration for the national championship should the Cougars defeat Reedley College History
Reedley College was founded in May 1926, as Reedley Junior College on the campus of Reedley High School. It became a full community college on July 1, 1946. In 1954, the school district voted to move Reedley College to its own campus and in 1956 it moved to its present
in Saturday's California Community College Championship game.

``I definitely think they have a chance,'' said Hank Ives, a Santa Ana-based sports publicist who has been ranking teams for 43 years. ``I haven't looked that far in the future ... but the winner of that game definitely will be one or two (in the country).''

Although Canyons is ranked No. 9 by JC Grid-Wire, Ives said the school had moved into the top five after its 52-27 victory last Saturday over No. 2 Chaffey College History

The school was first founded in Ontario in 1883, when city founders and brothers George and William Chaffey donated land and established an endowment for a private college.

Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  Bowl. Ives did not, however, release a set of rankings this week.

Reedley (11-0) has been ranked No. 1 by JC Grid-Wire for the past two weeks. And if the Tigers can defeat Canyons on Saturday in Bakersfield, Ives said it would be a ``no-brainer'' they would be national champions.

But Ives' decision would not be as clear-cut if Canyons (10-1) wins Saturday. Five of the eight teams ranked ahead of the Cougars in Ives' final regular-season poll lost last weekend, including No. 3 Georgia Military College Established in 1879 in Milledgeville, Georgia Military College (abbreviated as GMC) now includes a liberal arts junior college, a high school, and a middle school. GMC's focus is on a junior college military science program that culminates at the end of two years of study and , which fell to No. 15 Joliet, Ill., in the National Junior College Athletic Association The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) is an association of community college and junior college athletic departments throughout the United States of America.  title game.

With the victory, Joliet capped an 11-0 season and extended its unbeaten streak to 21 games. Ives said, however, he did not know whether the Wolves would be able to ascend all the way to No. 1 based solely on the victory over Georgia Military.

``They're going to move up significantly, it was a big win for them,'' said Ives, who has selected a California team as national champion in each of the past three years. ``But I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if, based on their whole season, that's enough to move into first place.''

Canyons coach Chuck Lyon said Thursday his team should be declared national champions if it upsets Reedley. The fact the Cougars would have beaten the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the country this month should more than offset Canyons' 39-32 loss to Cerritos on Sept. 21, Lyon added.

``I think whoever wins this game should be national champions, at least a piece of it,'' Lyon said. ``But it's not really a priority of mine. I don't put much into that. I just want to play well and have some fun with this game.''

Ives said he has seen Canyons play once - coincidentally, it was the loss to Cerritos. But Ives added Canyons has impressed him throughout the season.

``Their offense is almost unstoppable from what I've seen,'' Ives said.

The Cougars are averaging 53 points per game this season, best in the nation.

--Bauer's back: Sophomore quarterback Kyle Bauer returned Thursday and practiced for the first time all week. Bauer suffered a bruised sternum sternum: see rib.  in the victory over Chaffey, keeping him out Monday and Tuesday, and was up battling the flu all Tuesday night.

But Bauer said he never considered missing Saturday's game. Now Lyon and his staff are trying to get Bauer, who was named offensive MVP (Multimedia Video Processor) A high-speed DSP chip from Texas Instruments, introduced in 1994. ``He needs to learn reads, and he hasn't been doing that,'' Lyon said. ``We don't usually practice on Friday, but we're going to practice a little bit (today) because he has to get some reps.''

Lyon said freshman wide receiver Tyrell Smith also missed practice Wednesday with the flu. Like Bauer, Smith returned Thursday.

--Recruiting news: Lyon said Bauer received a scholarship offer from Division I-AA Weber State this week. The Cougars' success has served as a recruiting boon, both for its players and coaches. Lyon has fielded calls and welcomed visitors all week, even from schools he hadn't heard of before, such as Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The coach added he is eager to start recruiting players for next season.
