CALIFORNIA'S GAS PRICES FALL WHILE NATION'S RISE.

Gasoline prices have fallen nearly 6 cents a gallon on average in the past month in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. The average price of a gallon of regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Southern California was $1.456, down from $1.514 on Aug. 24.

The Southern California average price compares with a statewide average of $1.487 and a national mean of $1.282. The national average is 22 cents higher than September 1998, and just under the $1.288 average in September 1997.

The lowest prices in the Los Angeles-Orange County area were reported in Huntington Beach ($1.3034), La Habra ($1.3101) and Whittier ($1.3313). The highest were in Santa Clarita ($1.499), San Clemente ($1.45) and Santa Monica ($1.4749).

Industry analysts say gas prices are dropping in California because of decreasing demand following the summer travel season.

The Automobile Club of Southern California's monthly Fuel Gauge Report is based on data gathered from monitoring fuel transactions at 2,800 area gas stations.

According to the CSAA CSAA Child Study Association of America. , the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded, self-serve gas decreased this month by 10 cents to $1.64 in San Francisco, eight cents to $1.58 in San Jose and Santa Rosa and five cents to $1.59 in Oakland.
