, where he played for Harvard-Westlake of Studio City. He put up average numbers for a team that didn't make the playoffs.

Lining up alongside some of the top wide receivers in the state against the best defensive backs Florida had to offer, Shields showed he wasn't just a token selection.

Shields caught a 35-yard touchdown pass midway Midway, island group (2 sq mi/5.2 sq km), central Pacific, c.1,150 mi (1,850 km) NW of Honolulu, comprising Sand and Eastern islands with the surrounding atoll. ``I think I played that over in my mind 100 times before the game,'' Shields said. ``We ran that play in practice all week. That was the one I hoped to make my splash on. And it worked. It was wide open.''

The play culminated the key sequence of the game. Already up 7-0, an interception gave California the ball at the 35. The next play, Shields lined up in the slot and ran right up the seam seam (sem) a line of union.

, blowing by the linebacker to get wide open because no safety helped out. All of a sudden, California was up by two scores, and Florida couldn't recover.

``It was just a nicely designed play,'' Shields said. ``I think I proved myself. I got a touchdown on national television. Hopefully people saw that. I'll have to wait and see.''

Shields was referring to college scouts, most of whom didn't have him on their radar before Saturday. He led Harvard-Westlake, which went 4-6, with 43 catches for 710 yards and four touchdowns.

But the small private school isn't known for its football. Nobody knows that better than California starting quarterback Richard Irvin, whose career took off this year after transferring from Harvard-Westlake to Muir of Pasadena.

``Brian is definitely a great unknown here because he played in a program that doesn't really show your ability, which I say from experience,'' Irvin said. ``He belongs here as much as anyone. He's a legitimate receiver and should get picked up by someone.''

Irvin, who was named the game's most valuable player, and Shields reunited "Reunited" was a #1 hit in the United States in 1979 by the Washington, D.C.-based group Peaches & Herb.

``Compared to all the other wide receivers here, he isn't the most talented,'' Keller said of Shields. ``But he gets open and tries hard. You look at a guy like (New York Jets

Shields got the opportunity to play in the game because he was spotted at the training sessions of the air7sports football camp, the main sponsor of the CaliFlorida Bowl. ``This is the best week I've ever had playing football,'' Shields said. ``Not just this game but the whole week. Having the opportunity to play against the best players in California all week helped me as much as the game. I will take a lot from this experience.''
