 CALGENE APPOINTS MOTRONI TO VICE PRESIDENT OF FINANCE;
 WAGSTER TO HEAD OPERATIONS AT CALGENE FRESH
 DAVIS, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ: CGNE) today announced that Michael J. Motroni has been appointed vice president of finance. Motroni, 36, has been with the company since 1983 serving most recently as the corporate controller and chief accounting officer.
 "Mike's new responsibilities reflect the solid experience he has gained while at Calgene and his broad understanding of our operating businesses," stated Roger Salquist, chief executive officer. "As Calgene moves closer to commercialization of our products, Mike will play a key role in achieving that goal. Throughout his career at Calgene, Mike has demonstrated his ability to work equally effectively with scientists and the business community and to make the numbers useful management tools."
 Motroni received a B.S. in Business Administration from California State University, Sacramento. He has been a certified public accountant since 1980. He currently is a member of the Association of Bioscience Financial Officers. Prior to joining Calgene, Motroni was the controller for Trident Energy Systems, a developer, manufacturer and marketer of residential solar systems. Prior to Trident, he was with Coopers & Lybrand of Sacramento.
 Daniel O. Wagster II, Calgene's former chief financial officer, has been appointed vice president of operations and chief financial officer for Calgene Fresh Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Calgene Inc. Calgene Fresh will grow, pack, distribute and sell premium quality fresh produce to retail and food service markets. Calgene Fresh's initial product, branded tomatoes containing the proprietary FLAVR SAVR(TM) gene, will feature varieties genetically modified to deliver superior flavor to consumers.
 Calgene Inc. is a biotechnology company that is developing a portfolio of genetically engineered plants and plant products for the seed, food and oleochemical industries. The company has four operating subsidiaries -- Ameri-Can Pedigreed Seed Co., Calgene Chemical, Calgene Fresh, and Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co.
