CALGENE ALLOWED BROAD ANTI-SENSE PATENT

 CALGENE ALLOWED BROAD ANTI-SENSE PATENT
DAVIS, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Calgene Inc. (NASDAQ: CGNE)

today announced that it has received a Notice of Allowance from the U.S. Patent Office regarding its patent application entitled "Anti- Sense Regulation of Gene Expression in Plant Cells." Calgene expects the patent will dominate the use of anti-sense technology in plants. The allowed claims cover all plants and are not restricted by any limitations as to the type or species of plant cell. Anti-sense technology is the use of the reverse sequences of a specific gene to repress or "turn down" the expression of that gene.
"The allowance of these broad patent claims for this important technology provides continuing validation of Calgene's leadership in plant biotechnology," stated Roger Salquist, Calgene chairman and CEO. "Calgene presently has tomato and canola field trials underway with products employing anti-sense technology and plans to develop additional anti-sense products in tomato, canola and cotton, the company's three core crops. Calgene plans to license this technology under this patent to other companies developing plant products that are not directly competitive with our own," he added.
Calgene has also received plant anti-sense patent allowance notifications equivalent to the U.S. notice for Australia, New Zealand and Israel and is actively prosecuting patent protection in the other major countries. In February 1989, Calgene received the first U.S. plant anti-sense patent, covering the use of its FLAVR SAVR(TM) gene in tomato plants engineered to produce fruit with extended shelf life and enhanced flavor.
Calgene is an agribusiness biotechnology company that is developing improved plant varieties and plant products for the seed, food and specialty chemical industries. The company has three operating subsidiaries: Ameri-Can Pedigreed Seed Co., Calgene Chemical and Stoneville Pedigreed Seed Co.
