CALDY EDGE THRILLER TO END ON HIGH; RUGBY UNION.

CALDY ended their National Three North campaign on a high as they secured a hard fought 29-27 victory at Hull Ionians.

Andrew Soutar opened the scoring with a try in the corner and then hooker Neil Dowridge touched down after good work by Sam Dickinson.

Gavin Roberts added the conversion to make it 12-0 to the visitors.

Hull responded with a converted try from Gary Stephenson but Caldy hit back with John Broxson and Soutar combining to put Roberts in out wide.

Roberts converted his own score to put Caldy 19-7 up but a penalty helped Hull reduce the deficit just before the break.

In the second half Hull flew out of the blocks with two converted tries inside the opening four minutes from Richard Whittam and Dan Smith.

Caldy suddenly found themselves trailing 24-19 and coach Matt Holt decided to ring the changes.

It did the trick with sub Olly Cooper scoring a crucial try 16 minutes from time.

Both sides had kicked a penalty and it was 27-22 to Hull when Cooper weaved his way through to touch down under the posts.

Roberts made no mistake with the conversion and fine defence ensured Hull's late pressure went unrewarded..
