"Our store-for-store sales gain of 2.9% for the month represents
a substantial improvement over our early 1995 trend," said Don
Clarke, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Caldor. "Sales were
particularly strong in the fourth week with the onset of our first
period of warm weather throughout our markets."
The Caldor Corporation is the fourth largest discount department
store chain in the U.S. with sales of $2.7 billion during the last
12 months, and operates 163 stores in ten East Coast states, compared
to 153 a year earlier. With a strong consumer franchise in
high-density urban/suburban markets, Caldor offers a diverse
merchandise selection, including both softline and hardline products.
