CALCOMP DISPLAY PRODUCTS GROUP IN NEW HAMPSHIRE TO FOCUS EXCLUSIVELY
 ON CONTRACT MANUFACTURING AND DESIGN
Changes Name to Electronics Manufacturing Group
ANAHEIM, Calif., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- In a strategic move announced today by CalComp President William P. Conlin, the company's Display Products Group will now concentrate exclusively on providing contract manufacturing and design services. Group President Roger Damphousse, who reports to Conlin, will continue to head the Hudson, N.H.-based operation, which has been renamed the CalComp Electronics Manufacturing Group.
In line with the new strategy, further efforts in the group's family of graphics controllers and display systems will be limited to customer support, including the providing of spare parts.
Contract manufacturing is not new to the Hudson-based facility. In addition to developing and producing its own graphics display product line, the group has provided manufacturing and design services to other major electronics companies for nearly 15 years. Moreover, the group produces printed circuit card assemblies for CalComp's Computer Graphics and Digitizer Products Groups for use in CalComp plotters, printers and digitizers.
"In the last few years, we've seen a major shift in this market and an opportunity for CalComp" said Damphousse. "With the availability of quality manufacturing companies like ours and the rising cost of maintaining a manufacturing advantage, more firms are looking outside to fulfill their production needs. The use of outside contract manufacturing firms allows these companies to concentrate on product development, marketing and sales while reducing overall product costs and time-to-time market.
"Also, we believe our proximity to major electronics markets in New England, New York and New Jersey will be a definite plus for CalComp. With our well-established customer base, reputation for quality and lack of any major local competitors, we have a great opportunity to be the leading supplier of contract manufacturing services in the Northeast."
The group will sell its contract manufacturing services exclusively through outside manufacturing representatives -- in this regard -- recently signed The John E. Boeing Co. (JEBCO). One of the Northeast's leading electronics manufacturing rep firms, Chelmsford, Mass.-based JEBCO, established in 1953, has been selected to exclusively represent CalComp in the six New England states. In the near future, CalComp plans to expand its sales coverage to include New York and New Jersey.
 Electronics Manufacturing Group Capabilities
The CalComp Electronics Manufacturing Group maintains a highly automated 250,000-square-foot facility with more than 500 employees. The group's services include assembling surface mount and pin through- hold printed circuit cards, complete system integration, prototype development and production, test program and fixture design and direct shipment to the end user.
Also offered are full design engineering services, such as ASIC gate array design for cost reduction or new-technology redesign for producibility. "Because of shorter product life cycles and competitive pressures, products today must be priced as low as possible," said Damphousse. "Accordingly, we work with our customers early in the design phase -- making recommendations for reducing costs or enhancing the producibility of their designs."
Moreover, the group provides full turnkey procurement support, which involves purchasing the customer's components and materials and managing inventories. "We purchase large volumes of components, and this allows us to buy at much lower prices for our customers," said Damphousse. "Also, we qualify all of our suppliers to make sure they have the necessary process controls to meet CalComp's strict quality standards and just-in-time delivery requirements."
CalComp has long been recognized for its use of World Class Manufacturing techniques -- regularly hosting tours and providing consultation to other manufacturers at its Computer Graphics Group and Digitizer Products Group production plants (in Anaheim and Scottsdale, Ariz., respectively), as well the Electronics Manufacturing Group in Hudson.
"Throughout CalComp, we're committed to a program of continuous process improvement," said Damphousse. "For example, we use statistical process control to identify causes of process variations. Our engineers and operators meet regularly to discuss anomalies in the processes and to recommend and implement suggestions for improvement. Also, we've implemented a special program to improve quality yields of every process by a factor of 10."
Additionally, the company uses a customer satisfaction "report card" system, whereby customers provide weekly feedback on CalComp's quality, on-time delivery, service and communication.

CalComp Inc., a Lockheed company, was founded in 1958 and is headquartered in Anaheim. The company manufactures more than 100 computer graphics products and, in addition to contract manufacturing, holds major positions worldwide in the plotter, printer and digitizer markets.
