The CalArts faculty, including award-winning composer Morton Subotnik and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, will create new works for the center's inaugural season, which will feature artists from around the world.

CalArts' association with the new Disney complex continues a tradition begun more than 40 years ago, when Walt Disney helped found the institute at Valencia.

Even before the new venue opens, the arts college plans a Musical Explorations concert series from January through May, including performances - most of them at the Valencia campus - ranging from new jazz and African music and dance to new orchestral and chamber work.

School officials are also excited about plans for the theater season, especially for a premier by a major playwright whose name is not yet being released.

CalArts will also sponsor a series of film festivals and showcases on campus and at theaters throughout Los Angeles early in May. Animation and live-action film and video will be featured.
