CALARTS STUDENTS WIN TOP PRIZES.

VALENCIA - Five students from the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
 known as CalArts

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
 came away with first- and second-place awards in the 2004 Adobe Design Achievement Awards held Thursday night at the Yerba Buena yerba buena (yĕr`bə bwā`nə), trailing evergreen perennial (Micromeria chamissonis) of the family Labiatae (mint family). Top honors in the group print collaboration category went to the team of Samuel Farfsing and Brian Roettinger. Both recently graduated with degrees in graphic arts graphic arts: see aquatint; drawing; drypoint; engraving; etching; illustration; linoleum block printing; lithography; mezzotint; niello; pastel; poster; silk-screen printing; silhouette; silverpoint; sketch; stencil; woodcut and wood engraving. . Farfsing is currently working on a book of images and illustrations based on journals of the Lewis and Clark expedition Lewis and Clark expedition, 1803–6, U.S. expedition that explored the territory of the Louisiana Purchase and the country beyond as far as the Pacific Ocean. . Their entry was a graphic piece representing the school's graphics department that featured a circular design and the variables of history, context, concept and form.

Second-place winners were Leon Yan in the print category; Chanho Lee in the illustration category and Jun Seo Hahm in the time-based media category.

Yan, a recent graphic-arts graduate, studied cinema/television at the University of Southern California The U.S. News & World Report ranked USC 27th among all universities in the United States in its 2008 ranking of "America's Best Colleges", also designating it as one of the "most selective universities" for admitting 8,634 of the almost 34,000 who applied for freshman admission  before coming to CalArts to study photography, motion graphics, sound design and editing. His entry was a series of posters on a hypothetical exhibition of the Madchester dance scene of the early '90s in the U.K.

Lee was born in Seoul, South Korea, and majored in visual communication design at Hong Ik University. A graphic-design graduate, Lee worked as a graphic designer with the school's Community Arts Partnership The Community Arts Partnership (usually known as CAP) was established in 1990,and is the first program of its kind in the U.S. The program links the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) to community art centers and public schools throughout Los Angeles County as part of an  and was a Getty intern. His work ``Humanimal'' featured unusual characters that he described as ``hybrid combinations of human, animal and object.''

Hahm's ``Mosition,'' an animation about animation, came from his experience creating strips for alternative comic magazines and as a flash animation director before beginning his studies at CalArts. His interests include animation, motion graphics, live-action film, comics and illustration.

First-, second- and third-place winners were given airfare to San Francisco as well as accommodations. For their first-place win, Farfsing and Roettinger will share a $5,000 award and receive Adobe products.

More than 1,400 college students from the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , the United Kingdom and Canada competed in the annual event. Before the awards, the students were given tours of 12 of the city's top design studios, which allowed them to meet with creative professionals and see how studios operate.
