CALARTS STUDENT RATES HONOR IN VIDEO CONTEST.Byline: Bhavna Mistry Staff Writer CANYON COUNTRY - An animation major at California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts known as CalArts U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S. has won an honorable mention in the 13th annual Christopher Video Contest for College Students. Julia Lapshova, 21, a junior who presented a 5-minute animated video, ``A Simple Story,'' was among five recipients of the prestigious award presented by The Christophers. ``The judges who reviewed her piece were especially impressed by her stop-motion animation The original technique used to create an animated sequence. Each frame is created and photographed (or digitized) independently. Contrast with computer animation. Founded in 1945, The Christophers is a group that encourage individuals of all ages and faiths to use their abilities for constructive action. Lapshova, who immigrated from Russia when she was 15, produced a film that follows the story of a little girl who treated everyone with hatred and eventually was turned into a bird. ``I was thinking of morals and that was my moral,'' Lapshova said. ``That was my story.'' Winners were announced by Gerald Costello, a Christophers administrator, who said the 261 entries displayed creativity and thoughtfulness in their interpretations of The Christophers' ideal of one individual making a difference. Each year The Christophers host the international competition, asking participants to interpret the notion that everyone has the ability to make the world a better place. In additional to earning cash awards, the winning students will have their work seen nationwide when their entries air on Christopher Closeup, the weekly syndicated television series produced by The Christophers since 1952.
