CALARTS STUDENT FILMS AIRING AT SUNDANCE.

VALENCIA - Mari Inukai has twin passions: hand-drawn animation and her 10-year-old daughter, Sena.

So it was only natural that Inukai, then in her second year at the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts
 known as CalArts

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
, would weave the two together in her film ``Blue and Orange.''

``My daughter is what keeps me going in my life,'' Inukai said. ``I wanted to explore the connection between animation as a medium for artistic expression and my love for my daughter.''

The short animated film, which is partly in Japanese with English subtitles, will be shown next week at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah Park City is a city located in Summit County, Utah, United States. It is one of two major resort towns in Utah, the other being Moab. It is considered to be part of the Wasatch Back and a part of the Salt Lake City metropolitan area.  - the premier showcase for American and international independent films.

``It's like a dream to me,'' said Inukai, now a third-year student in CalArts' bachelor of fine arts The Bachelor of Fine Arts, usually abbreviated BFA, is the standard undergraduate degree for students seeking a professional education in the visual or performing arts. While work by CalArts students is reviewed by the Sundance Film Festival every year, student work rarely makes the cut, festival officials said.

More than 3,330 short films were submitted to the festival - and just 90 were selected, including seven by CalArts alumni, according to according to

Inukai's film has also won praise from the school's professors for its combination of still frames within the animation, and its personal story.
