image, as it does for many.

The litter, the broken-down storefronts, the runaways and the homeless contrasted rudely with the stars on the Walk of Fame, creating an irony too obvious for the CalArts student to ignore. So she didn't.

With memories of her own insecure childhood as the daughter of a single mom still fresh, the 22-year-old Fresno native armed herself with a Pentax 35 mm camera and set out to capture an image that also would capture the irony.

It appears she has done it.

Befriending an elderly man she knows only as Jonathan, Mallard snapped a picture of him in his disheveled clothing, sitting next to his shopping cart. Sitting on the boulevard, his white hair matted with dirt, he is shown autographing a blank Walk of Fame star.

``I knew I had something when I did it,'' recounted the art student, who is in her first semester at CalArts after transferring from junior college in Fresno.

Mallard's creation will be displayed in a unique art and performance show set for May 7 at the Main Gallery at the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts

. The 5:30 p.m. show is free and open to the public.

Dubbed ``It Could Happen to You'' as a reminder of how close many are to life on the street, the show will feature a mural of the photograph - but patrons are being encouraged to bring more than their aesthetic sensibilities.

Seeking to differentiate her work from what she says can be the self-serving, socially removed art of her contemporaries, Mallard is asking visitors to donate cash, food or clothing for the needy.

``One thing that happens here a lot is that people do a lot of odd, strange artwork. It just turns people off,'' Mallard said. ``My mom worked three different jobs, 12 hours a day. I am trying to collect for the homeless.''

``Winly comes from a single-parent home. Her art has a close kinship to the homeless and needy,'' said school spokeswoman Anita Bonnell. ``I think the last time we had a benefit like this was after the (1989) San Francisco earthquake San Francisco earthquake

Mallard has experience in helping others. While at Fresno City College Fresno City College (or FCC) is a city college in Fresno, California. Established in 1910, it was the first community college in California and the second in the nation. , she tutored high school and college students. She also is participating in a CalArts program that exposes Los Angeles-area students to art.

There will be light-hearted moments at Mallard's exhibit, however, including a dance to the old chestnut, ``When You Wish Upon a Star.'' Members of the Los Angeles County Fire Department Not to be confused with Los Angeles Fire Department.
