CALARTS RENAMES DANCE SCHOOL.

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
 is honoring one of its most generous benefactors, the late Sharon Disney Lund, by renaming its dance school The Sharon Disney Lund School of Dance.

, was a longtime supporter of CalArts. Gifts given to CalArts from Lund and the Sharon D. Lund Foundation now total more than $28 million. The renaming follows a recent commitment of $11 million from the foundation headed by Lund's children, Michelle and Brad.

``Although she was reluctant to stand in the spotlight, I think Sharon would be pleased that this permanent acknowledgment of her extraordinary generosity will stand as an example of how one individual's confidence, commitment and careful stewardship can nurture an institution and its artists today and for years to come,'' said CalArts President Steven D. Lavine.

Lund was named to the institute's board of trustees board of trustees Politics The posse of thugs who oversee an institution's administration. See Board of directors.  in 1976 and worked in that capacity for more than 15 years. She provided the lead gift to finance the Campaign for CalArts in 1991, and her foundation provided much-needed help in the months following the disastrous 1994 earthquake.

The foundation's most recent $11 million pledge has enabled CalArts to complete construction of the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater, endow many activities of the School of Dance and dedicate the Sharon Disney Lund Dance Theater The German Tanztheater ("dance theatre") grew out of German expressionist dance. Its most influential performers are Pina Bausch and Susanne Linke.  at CalArts.

The gift will translate directly into scholarships and programs at CalArts in the training and education of young and emerging talent. It also would bring prominent national and international artists to Redcat.

CalArts founders Walt and Roy Disney Roy Disney can refer to two different people:
  • Roy Oliver Disney (1893-1971) was Walt Disney's older brother and the financier of his efforts.
  • Roy Edward Disney (1930–) is Roy Oliver's son and Director Emeritus of The Walt Disney Company.
 envisioned an interdisciplinary school in which all the arts would interact and flourish, guided by the spirit of independent artistic expression.
