CALARTS RECEIVES $750,000 GRANT.

U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S.
 has been awarded a $750,000 grant from the James Irvine James Irvine may refer to:
  • James Irvine (1735-1819), Pennsylvania politician, Vice-President (i.e. Lt. Governor) of Pennsylvania.
  • James Irvine (chemist) (1877-1952), chemist and vice-chancellor of the University of St Andrews

 organizations to receive the grants totaling $24.6 million the foundation has provided to support 73 projects statewide.

CalArts will use the money to support the Cornerstone Arts Organization, which identifies and supports a cadre of exemplary arts organizations that are the ``cornerstone'' of California's arts and culture.

The CAO program identifies high-performance arts organizations in California, provides multiyear funding to support the core programs and activities of these organizations, and recognizes institutional leadership in California's arts field.

The James Irvine Foundation is an independent foundation dedicated to enhancing the social, economic and physical quality of life throughout the state, and to enriching California's intellectual and cultural environment.

The foundation was established in 1937 by James Irvine, the California pioneer whose 110,000-acre ranch in Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  was among the largest privately owned land holdings in the state.
