CALARTS REACHES OUT TO COMMUNITY.

VALENCIA - While it's been a local mainstay for more than 30 years, CalArts is courting its neighbors like never before.

 has launched a membership drive for CalArts Connection, a project that will offer members the chance to network and interact with national artists, including painters, writers, filmmakers and dancers.

``We're hoping to get some people together from the community who don't really know that much about CalArts,'' said Katie Patrykus, the school's manager of annual programs. ``We have some great resources here and we haven't reached out to the community as much as we'd have liked.''

Aside from the various events exhibits, plays and other events on CalArts' yearly calendar, members of the program will be invited to two special events during the year, the first an evening of jazz, wine and conversation to be held in mid- to late March.

``Both Charlie Haden and David Roitstein will be playing at the event,'' Patrykus said. ``It will be like a jazz club A jazz club is a venue where the primary entertainment is live jazz. Often such venues are in the basement of residential buildings. They are rather small compared to other music venues, reflecting the intimate atmosphere of jazz concerts. , to get people talking. This will be the first event, which we'd like to be a networking thing for business or social purposes.''

Membership dues - $500 for individuals and $1,000 for businesses - will help support student scholarships, faculty development, improved equipment and other campus needs.

In addition to the two invitation-only events, members will receive a subscription to the CalArts Events calendar, tickets to performances with pre- and post-parties, an annual jazz CD and access to lectures.
