Bassist Charlie Haden Charles Edward Haden (born August 6, 1937) is a jazz double bassist, probably best known for his long association with saxophonist Ornette Coleman. One nomination for best jazz instrumental solo for the song ``Now is the Hour'' on the Verve album of the same name, and the other is with his group Quartet West for the same song in the category of best jazz instrumental performance, individual or group.

Haden, who teaches at CalArts, also plays throughout James Cotton's ``Deep in the Blues'' album, which has been nominated for best traditional blues album.

The nominations mark the eighth and ninth for Haden.

When he isn't teaching, Haden performs around the world. The jazz program he created at CalArts encourages students to develop as improvisers, composers and performers. Students integrate jazz with music of different cultures.

Haden's professional career began in Missouri when he was 2 and touted as the youngest cowboy singer and yodeler on the air, on the Haden family's popular Midwest radio show. He taught himself jazz and moved to Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  in the late '50s.

His previous Grammy nominations came last year for his work with Hank Jones and their duet album ``Steal Away.'' In 1995, Quartet West was nominated for best jazz instrumental performance on its album ``Always Say Goodbye.'' On the same album, Haden himself was nominated for best jazz instrumental solo on the song ``Alone Together.'' The year before that, his album ``Haunted Heart'' with Quartet West and ``Dream Keeper'' with his Liberation Music Orchestra Liberation Music Orchestra is a large jazz ensemble led by US-American jazz bassist Charlie Haden. The ensemble has been an occasional operation, with shifting personnel. Aside from Charlie Haden, composer and arranger Carla Bley has had a great impact on the ensemble as she  received nominations.
