``I worked with my friend Tahli Fisher and we came up with this idea to document the visual style of the '80s,'' Kyes said.

``We did a lot of archival research and found news stories and photographs from that time period and came up with a story about a book that had been written and canceled at press time.

``We put contemporary images in the gutters of the pages to contrast the archival stuff with present day.''

The project called for the pair to design the invitation, program and souvenir of the graduation.

The invitation bears a water-stained label from a Hollywood printing company with ``job canceled'' stamped across the corner - and a sampling of images inside that reflect the book.

``There's a picture in there that's actually caused some controversy,'' Kyes said. ``It's of a topless woman, from the archives, that illustrated the empowerment of women.

``I'm very pleased with the way everything turned out and happy it created a stir. But it will challenge people how the image of CalArts has changed over the years,'' he said.
