CALARTS ANIMATION PIONEER EARNS FRIZ AWARD FOR BODY OF WORK.Byline: Daily News Jules Engel, who founded the experimental animation program at the California Institute of the Arts California Institute of the Arts known as CalArts U.S. private institution of higher learning in Valencia. Created in 1961 through the merger of two other art institutes, it was the first in the U.S. , will be honored Friday with the Friz Award, named for the creator of the irrepressible Bugs Bunny. He has had numerous solo exhibitions of his films around the world and has been honored at film festivals in Venice, Edinburgh and Oberhausen. He won the Norman McLaren Heritage Award last year in Canada and also received the Winsor McCay Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Animated Film Society. Engel has been a member of the CalArts School of Film and Video faculty since 1970, and he has served on the executive board of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for the past 30 years. The Friz presentation will be made during the festival awards banquet at the Odyssey restaurant. Director Henry Selick, a former student of Engel's at CalArts, will present the award. Selick's film credits include ``James and the Giant Peach'' and ``Nightmare Before Christmas.''
