around tables in Calabasas' City Council chambers, about 35 people met Saturday to dream up a new City Hall.

Should it have pillars? An outdoor amphitheater? A fountain? A fireplace?

The morning meeting was part of a months-long effort to collect public suggestions on the design of Calabasas' future civic center. The city's government and library have outgrown the offices they now lease, and the plan is to build a new home on seven acres off Park Sorrento, near the intersection of Parkway Calabasas.

So, with little to guide them but a site map, the mix of public officials and interested citizens pitched their own ideas of what image the center's design should project.

``We've had everything from it should be a modern statement of the 21st century, to it should be classical and traditional,'' said Fred Gaines, a library commissioner leading the discussion at one table. ``What's your first thought of what a Calabasas City Hall and Library should look like?''

Most favored a classical approach, although definitions varied. Some wanted pillars, others, a Spanish theme.

``Maybe it's an old-time idea, but I'd like to have a tower,'' said Henry Cespedes, who serves on the city's tree board.

``Possibly there could be a historical mural mural

``We can't accommodate everything, so it's going to be a matter of the community establishing priorities,'' Loomis said.

The next community meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., Sept. 25 at the council chambers.
