Anthony and his father, John, 41, were enjoying a day out at the festival Saturday while mom, Rhonda, studied at home for a test.

And there was plenty for the pair to do.

In addition to pumpkin painting, there were contests in pumpkin-pie eating and pumpkin-seed spitting, pumpkin bowling, a cornstalk-and-hay-bale maze, a petting zoo, face painting, crafts, pony rides, climbing towers, live music, food and games. People at the fall festival could admire the giant pumpkins, including one that weighed in at 684 pounds.

Ray Ota, 57, of Whittier won one of the pie-eating contests by burying his face into a whipped-cream-topped pie and ingesting as much as he could in 30 seconds.

``I drank it,'' Ota said, a daub of whipped cream still clinging to one of his eyebrows. ``It's like drinking a thick Slurpee. I haven't done that since college.''
