CALABASAS CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS STARTING STRONG.

Byline: Julio Cortez Staff Writer

The most improved cross country teams in the area this season may at Calabasas High. The boys, third in the Tri-Valley league last year, have jumped to a 3-0 start. The girls, who finished in fourth, are 4-1 in preseason meets.

``This is without a doubt my fastest team so far,'' said fifth-year coach Ken Kennett. ``They're a really young team. I'm happy.''

The team is ready to show what it can do at the Oak Park Invitational on Thursday.

The teams face Oak Park, Agoura and Westlake, which are among the state's top teams.

Daniel Maher is the one reason the Coyotes are successful. The junior is in his first season of cross country. Mainly a short-distance runner - 100 and 300 hurdlers, 1600 relay and the Coyotes top triple jumper - Maher won a tri-meet with St. Monica and Brentwood last Thursday. A week earlier he won against Chaminade. Between the two meets, he cut his time 1-1/2 minutes.

``He's learning a lot,'' Kennett said. ``He works really hard. I love to have people with his type of attitude.''

The girls' top runner, Aya Osuga, also had a first-place finish Noun 1. first-place finish - a finish in first place (as in a race)
