CALABASAS CIVIC HEART BEGINS TO TAKE SHAPE GROUND IS BROKEN ON CITY HALL, LIBRARY.

Byline: RACHEL URANGA Staff Writer

CALABASAS -- Nearly 16 years after it became a city, Calabasas finally has a place to call home.

About 200 city officials and residents gathered Saturday to break ground on a $41 million city hall and library.

More than 10 years in the planning, the civic center is being touted as the region's most environmentally friendly Environmentally friendly, also referred to as nature friendly, is a term used to refer to goods and services considered to inflict minimal harm on the environment.[1]  city hall and a symbol of the city's coming of age.

``It's beyond what any of us could have dreamed,'' said Marvin Lopata, a city founder and former councilman.

``When we began, we just wanted to be a community. We didn't have aspirations aspirations nplaspiraciones fpl (= ambition); ambición f

Standing atop a 71/2-acre property acquired by the city a decade ago, much of the civic center will be built using recycled materials and it is designed to use less energy than average buildings.

The City Council also preserved about six acres of open space surrounding the facility.

Paid for by a state grant, donations and city funding, the library will hold 90,000 books, movies and music.

The entire complex is expected to be completed late next year.

``I can't wait to see it,'' said Brenda Johnson, a 46-year-old resident and pharmacy owner. ``Every city has to have a center. ... Now we have our own, a heart to our city.''

Founded in 1991, the 12.9-square-mile city is among one of the county's richest, with average home prices about $1.3 million.
