Corp. said Wednesday that it entered into a service agreement with IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) and also received a three-year contract from BellSouth to supply it with network switching products. IBM will service Xylan's customers in a four-hour on-site program, initially launched in 30 cities nationwide. The computer maker will carry spare products and train its field personnel to assist Xylan customers. BellSouth's contract calls for using Xylan's OmniSwitch and PizzaSwitch products to speed up and broaden customer local area network connections. ``The potential revenue from phone companies is huge,'' said John Mazzaferro, Xylan director of corporate marketing. ``Once you're in one (Bell company), it's much easier to get into another one.'' Xylan closed at 21-3/8 on Wednesday, up -7/8. Analysts said the IBM service agreement was a natural progression from Xylan's existing venture with the computer giant to develop network switching products. Xylan's deal with BellSouth also has been rumored for some time, they said. ``It's somewhat expected,'' said Erik Suppiger, research associate of data networking at Deutsche Morgan Grenfell in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden .
