Collins has a way of getting under the opposition's skin, especially the way he likes to run them around in circles during the course of a game.

Collins, a Newbury Park High School graduate, was up to his usual tricks in Texas over the weekend during Cal Lutheran's two nonconference wins over Texas Lutheran and Southwestern University For other places with the same name, see Southwestern University (disambiguation).

and at one point I said they've got to get that poor defender off the field, he's not going to make it'' Kuntz said. ``Brian is the type of player who plays hard the entire 90 minutes. He'll take a defender and run him around all over the place. As a coach it's fun to watch.''

Collins says it's all a part of his plan.

``I try to tire the other guy out so that by the end of the game it's easier to beat them,'' he said. ``At the beginning of the game I'm pretty even with all the other guys. But towards the end, that's when I feel I can be effective.''

Collins and his teammates paid particular attention to conditioning work during the off-season. As a result, the Kingsmen entered the current season in much better shape then years past. And Collins is an even stronger player at the end of games.

``I feel I'm in the top shape of my life right now,'' said Collins. ``We worked a lot on fitness and it really shows.''

Kuntz describes Collins as an excellent athlete who has a nose for the goal. He scores in a variety of different ways.

``He's tough for anybody to mark because he's a very talented athlete,'' said Kuntz. ``He's got excellent acceleration, he's physically very strong and technically he has a great shot. He can put the ball right on the frame from a lot of different positions.''

Collins is pleased with his decision to stay close to home and play at Cal Lutheran because it gives his parents and family an opportunity to see him play on a consistent basis. This being his junior year, his main goal is to help the Kingsmen get to the national championship, something which eluded them by the slimmest of margins last year.

For now he's concentrating on the current season. He admits the pace with which he's scoring this year - five goals and two assists in four games - is a bit surprising.

``Right now my average has been consistent, which is good,'' he said. ``Hopefully I can keep it up.''
