CAL LUTHERAN NOTES: UNBEATEN CLU SETS SCHOOL GOLF RECORD.

It may be a bit quiet around the Cal Lutheran campus this week, what with the school on spring break. Still, what is usually considered the most silent of the sports has made the biggest clamor.

The golf team improved to 7-0, 5-0 in the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with a 288-317 victory over La Verne on April 2 in CLU's final home match of the season at Thousand Oaks' Sunset Hills.

The 288 team total broke the school record for the lowest team score. The week prior against Occidental, the Kingsmen shot a collective 296, at that time tying the record for the third-lowest team total.

Clint Elsemore led the way for the Kingsmen against the Leopards, shooting a 3-under-par 68. CLU opens the SCIAC Tournament on April 13 at Rancho Cucamonga's Empire Lakes GC.

Rhythm vacation: With a week off, CLU sports are in recession - a good thing for some, not so good for others. For instance, the baseball team (18-5, 14-1) has won 15 of its past 18 games and three in a row but hasn't played since a 6-5 victory over Pomona-Pitzer on March 29, sweeping the three-game series. The SCIAC leaders, hitting .377 as a team, were rained out in nonconference away games with The Master's and UC San Diego and don't play again until an April 17 date with La Verne at North Field.

Joe Jauregui is leading the Kingsmen hitting barrage, currently hitting .493 (36-73) with 20 RBI.

At last: The women's tennis team (2-9, 1-6) has struggled this season but won its first conference match March 28 at La Verne, sweeping to a 9-0 victory. With a match scheduled for Occidental on Tuesday, the Regals are one of the few CLU programs still playing through the break (see graphic).
