CAL LUTHERAN NOTEBOOK: REGALS EAGER TO FACE UC SAN DIEGO AGAIN.

Division III (or DIII) is a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association of the United States.
 championships last March, the date Nov. 28 has been circled.

It's the date, this Saturday, that Cal Lutheran will host UC San Diego in a nonconference game. It starts at 5 p.m.

``We're excited,'' said Cal Lutheran coach Tim LaKose. ``We're looking at it as a tournament game that is being played early in the season. It's one game the players have been looking forward to.''

Cal Lutheran is the top-ranked team in the West Region in Division III and the Tritons are ranked No. 2.

The Regals have started the season strongly, winning their first three games by an average margin of 18.3 points.

The team has done it with offense and defense.

 in the season opener the Regals scored 93 points. On Tuesday, when they defeated Westmont, the defense held the Warriors to 48 points.

``Ideally, we like to do both well,'' LaKose said. ``Our defense has been pretty good, and on offense we can make some runs. (Against Westmont) we struggled on offense, but our defense played well.''

Through the first three games, Missy Rider is the leading scorer and rebounder. The 6-foot senior center is averaging 19.3 points and double figures in rebounds. Nicole Sanchez is averaging 14.7 points a game.

The team has today off for the Thanksgiving, but practices Friday in preparation for Saturday's game.

Men's basketball: The Kingsmen split their first two games, losing to CS Dominguez Hills 68-55 Friday and beating La Sierra 80-54 on Saturday.

Against La Sierra 14 players saw action and 13 of them scored.

Cal Lutheran trailed 2-0, but used a 10-0 run and a 28-6 run in the first half to put the game away.

The team is off through the weekend and plays its next game Dec. 1 at UC San Diego.
