CAL LUTHERAN NOTEBOOK: INTERCEPTIONS ARE COSTLY; FOURTH-QUARTER DRIVES STOPPED IN KINGSMEN'S LOSS TO REDLANDS.

Byline: Patrick Hipes Daily News Staff Writer

Cal Lutheran quarterback Zack Hernandez continues to put up impressive numbers, but the stats that count - the final score and the team record - are not following.

Hernandez, a senior from L.A. Baptist High School, threw two touchdown passes and ran for another in Saturday's 28-21 loss to defending Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference The Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) is a college athletic conference that operates in the NCAA's Division III. It consists of eleven small private schools which are located in Southern California and organized into eight athletic programs.  champ Redlands at Mt. Clef Stadium.

He ran for 67 yards and was 17 for 25 for 165 yards in the air, but he threw his second interception late in the fourth quarter with the Kingsmen (1-3, 0-1) driving.

From frying pan to fire: After the Redlands loss left it 1-2 in its early season homestand, Cal Lutheran travels to La Verne La Verne (lə vûrn), city (1990 pop. 30,897), Los Angeles co., S Calif., a suburb of Los Angeles; inc. 1906. La Verne, which began as a citrus-processing center, now has varied manufacturing, including electronic components, apparel, hand  to meet the Leopards on Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Kingsmen are 16-8 lifetime against La Verne (2-2, 2-1), but have not beaten them in the '90s - that's seven consecutive SCIAC SCIAC SIGINT Correlation Integration & Analysis Capability  losses.

Last season, the Kingsmen fell at home 34-10, getting just 241 total yards. In 1995, with the SCIAC title in the balance, the Leopards won at home 31-21 to take its third consecutive conference championship.

The Streak is over: The Regals' volleyball team watched its 26-match SCIAC winning streak Noun 1. winning streak - a streak of wins

end last Wednesday at La Verne, falling 15-11, 15-4, 15-4 to the Leopards.

Cal Lutheran (1-5, 1-1) led Game 1 at one point 10-0.

The loss to La Verne, meaning the Regals fall one victory short of the SCIAC record of 27 in a row, had its measured sense of irony - the Leopards had set the original mark of 26 consecutive victories from 1987-90.

Cal Lutheran (7-3, 5-0) lost to UC San Diego 1-0 on a goal in the 78th minute on Sunday, snapping a six-game winning streak.

The Regals hit two posts in the first half.

Rolling, Part II: Ryan Girod of Camarillo High School scored four goals in the first half of a 10-0 victory over Cal Tech in the SCIAC men's soccer opener Saturday.

It was the latest in an encouraging run for the Kingsmen (6-2-1, 1-0), who beat The Master's College History
