CAL LUTHERAN NOTEBOOK: EXPERIENCE GAINED BUT NO WINS ON TRIP.

Byline: Jim Inghram Daily News Staff Writer

Two losses and out. It wasn't the itinerary the men's soccer team planned on its trip to the Midwest.

A tournament title at the 23rd Bob Baptiste Invitational in Naperville, Ill., would have been preferred, but the team settled for some bonding.

The team lost its first game 5-1 to host Wheaton College Wheaton College may refer to:

``I think as a group we learned a lot,'' Kingsmen coach Dan Kuntz said. ``The key thing we learned is we can do better and although we didn't win, I haven't lost confidence in this team.''

The team's play wasn't necessarily the entire problem. Living out of a suitcase also affected the team.

``Travel and not having practice are excuses,'' Kuntz said, ``but at the same time those are realities and they are real factors. It only really showed in the Wheaton game when we looked a step slow.''

The team left Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  on Thursday night arrived in Reno, where it had a three-hour layover lay·o·ver

The team arrived in Chicago around 7 a.m. and went directly to suburban Naperville to begin preparations. No hotel, no rest, just straight into competition.

``Our first practice wasn't until Aug. 28th and these other teams started on Aug. 20,'' Kuntz said. ``It definitely made a difference, but those teams are really good. We lost our composure a little in the games and we weren't able to recover.''

and freshman Kim Nelli combined for the shutout.

``We had a great opening game,'' Kuntz said. ``We're going to have one of our best teams we've had.''

Football: Last year Cal Lutheran lost its opener at Menlo College 32-21, but turned it around on the Oaks on Saturday, 24-21.
