CAL LEAGUE: JETHAWKS MAKE STATEMENT WITH WIN JETHAWKS 9, HIGH DESERT 6.

Byline: Gideon Rubin Special to the Daily News

LANCASTER - Salvaging the last of a three-game series in Sunday's 9-6 victory over the High Desert Mavericks The High Desert Mavericks are a minor league baseball team in Adelanto, California, USA. Their Major League parent club is the Seattle Mariners. They are a "high-A" class team in the California League, and had been a farm team of the Kansas City Royals since 2005 before the switch.  in front of 1,330 at Clear Channel Stadium had nothing to do with the JetHawks' push to make the playoffs.

Truth be told, it worked against them, thanks to the California's two-tier qualifying system based on half-season titles and wild cards Symbols used to represent any value when selecting specific files. In DOS, Windows and Unix, the asterisk (*) represents any collection of characters, and the question mark (?) represents one single character. In SQL, the percent sign (%) and underscore (_) are used for matching text.  (based on overall records) that has the JetHawks magic number for making the playoffs pinned to High Desert eliminating Rancho Cucamonga Rancho Cucamonga (răn`chō k'kəmäng`gə), city (1990 pop. 101,409), San Bernardino co., S Calif.  from the second-half title race.

But the win Sunday had everything to do with giving the JetHawks a sense of purpose should they make the postseason.

``It's a big win for us,'' JetHawks manager Bill Plummer William Francis Plummer (born March 21, 1947 in Oakland, CA) was a catcher for the Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and the Seattle Mariners. While never a regular player (he was Johnny Bench's backup catcher during the Big Red Machine years), he did play solid defense.  said. ``This is a team we're going to be playing in the playoffs, and they need to fear us a little bit or else it's going to be (a short playoff).''

The JetHawks (33-30 in the second half, 70-54 overall) won for the 16th time in their past 22 games.

Neb Brown's three-run homer to right in the seventh - his first in 151 JetHawks at-bats - broke a 6-6 tie.

High Desert (37-26, 73-60) rallied from a 6-1 deficit, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh in an inning highlighted by two-run homers by Wally Sevilla and Kila Kaaihue.

JetHawks starter Matt Chico Matthew Bryan "Matt" Chico (born June 10, 1983 in Fullerton, California) is a left-handed starting pitcher for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball. A graduate of Fallbrook Union High School, Chico attended Palomar College and was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks  struck out seven batters and allowed four runs - three earned - on six hits and three walks.

JetHawks catcher Phil Avlas (Kennedy High of Granada Hills) was 3 for 4 with a double.

--Notes: Rancho Cucamonga (30-32, 58-73) lost to Lake Elsinore on Sunday, reducing High Desert's magic number for winning the second half and the JetHawks magic number for making the playoffs to seven. ... Injured in·jure
