CAL EPA APPROVES FINAL CLOSURE OF MONTEZUMA HILLS SITE
TORRANCE, Calif., April 6 /PRNewswire/ -- International Technology

Corp. (IT) (NYSE: ITX) announced today approval by CAL EPA Department of Toxic Substance Control (DTSC) of final closure of its Montezuma Hills disposal site. The Montezuma Hills site received liquid wastes from oil and gas production and Bay Area industry from 1979 to 1986. In connection with IT's divestiture of its transportation, treatment and disposal operations in December 1987, closure of the company's inactive disposal sites, including Montezuma Hills, was announced. Closure plan applications for the Montezuma Hills site were submitted in 1987 and subsequently approved in 1990. Closure construction occurred over a two-year period. The approval by DTSC of closure completion resulted in the release of a $4.3 million letter of credit related to financial assurance requirements.
Design, permitting and closure construction were performed using IT's turnkey capabilities, including engineering, laboratory and construction and remediation services. Closure of the site included chemical stabilization, consolidation of wastes, construction of a slurry wall barrier and multi-layer cap, construction of a new multiple lined impoundment and reclamation of all surface areas with native vegetation.
"The completion of closure of Montezuma Hills demonstrates the progress the company is achieving toward closure of its inactive disposal sites in Northern California," said Murray H. Hutchison, chairman and chief executive officer. "Significant progress has also been made toward final closure of our other three major sites. We expect to complete closure of the Benson Ridge site within calendar year 1992 and have performed substantial remediation activities toward closure of the other two sites while awaiting permit approvals."
International Technology Corp., based in Torrance, is a leading environmental management company providing services to government and industry. The company's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ITX.
