CAL'S JACKSON AVOIDING `ACTION!' ACTOR'S SON WORKING TOWARD THIRD-BASE JOB.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

This summer, when Conor Jackson Conor Sims Jackson (nicknamed Co-Jack or Action) was born May 7, 1982 in Austin, Texas. He is a first baseman in Major League Baseball who plays for the Arizona Diamondbacks. He bats right handed and throws right handed. He is 6'2" and roughly 225 pounds.  signs a lucrative pro contract and accepts a minor-league assignment in small-town America, it won't be the glamorous life.

The former El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

at California. A probable first-round draft pick in June, Jackson is eager to start the painstaking road to the major leagues.

Unlike others in his position, Jackson once had the alternative of following his father's career choice. John Jackson John Jackson may refer to:

Politics:
  • John Jackson (Gold Coast), colonial governor in Gold Coast, (now Ghana)
  • John Jackson (Tampa), mayor of Tampa, Florida
  • Sir John Jackson, 1st Baronet (1763-1820), British businessman and MP for Dover
is a respected character actor, appearing in several blockbuster movies and an ongoing role in a successful television series.

Conor Jackson wants to try acting someday. But it's not as if Dad's Hollywood existence is any less tedious than toiling in the bus leagues of the low minors.

``It's really boring. No one really knows that,'' Conor Jackson said of his experiences visiting the set of ``JAG judge advocate general (J.A.G.) n. a military officer who advises the government on courts-martial and administers the conduct of courts-martial. The officers who are judge advocates and counsel assigned to the accused come from the office of the judge advocate ,'' the CBS (Cell Broadcast Service) See cell broadcast.  drama on which John Jackson portrays Adm. A.J. Chegwidden. ``Everybody thinks it's a lot of fun and that you shoot one episode in a day.''

John Jackson equated it to ``watching paint dry.'' Conor knows a little about it. He won a part on a television commercial as a 12-year-old and auditioned for dozens more advertisements and roles on TV shows. But mainly because John and his wife, Jana, preferred not to push their two children into show business, Conor remained a typical San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

teenager. And one of its finest baseball prospects.

After a solid freshman season as Cal's everyday third baseman, Jackson had an even bigger 2002. Despite being shifted to an unfamiliar position (first base) because of injuries, he developed into one of college baseball's top offensive players. A .382 average, 16 homers and 61 RBI RBI

made believers of pro scouts, opposing head coaches and Cal coach David Esquer.

``I think he always had the potential to hit for power,'' Esquer said. ``But he's patient. He doesn't strike out much, and that's rare for a power hitter.''

Added coach Mike Gillespie There are 3 sports coaches with the name Mike Gillespie:

of Pacific-10 Conference rival USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. , which showed interest in Jackson but didn't offer him a scholarship: ``We saw him, and we liked him. But most honestly, I think (he's) a huge surprise. I think it's rare that you can predict that anybody can turn into that kind of player. For him to have gone from good or very good to premier, that's a lot to ask of anybody. And he has become that.''

Jackson is more convincing as Banks (Ernie) than Hanks (Tom). John Jackson once coached his son: to improve his swing, not memorize script lines. John continues to help out with West Hills area youth baseball teams.

But he does his best work on the big and small screens. At times he's too believable.

``When we first moved out here, I was doing a movie called ``The Hitcher,'' and I had to get beaten up and had fake blood all over me,'' John Jackson said. ``The (set's) showers went out. And I had to drive home covered in blood. When I got home, Conor and his sister were up and I had to explain to them why I looked that way. And they were 4 and 6.''

In another project, John played an abusive father on a television movie. Conor, then about 7, happened to watch the show.

``It was so convincing, after I saw it I was so scared of him. Because it was the first time I'd seen him play a really, really bad guy,'' Conor said. ``He had to sit me down and say, `Hey, listen, it was just a movie.'

``If anyone knows him, he's nothing like any of the roles he's played. And that's why he's a brilliant actor.''

The younger Jackson's baseball ability is on the verge On the Verge (or The Geography of Yearning) is a play written by Eric Overmyer. It makes extensive use of esoteric language and pop culture references from the late nineteenth century to 1955.  of falling into the terrific category. He'll return to the more comfortable third-base job for Cal this season. He's projected to play there at the next level.

He plans to act someday, possibly taking the route his father did, first on Broadway and gradually breaking into film and television projects. A theater and performance studies major at Cal, Jackson admires his favorite actor, Daniel Day-Lewis, as much as he looks up to the Scott Rolen and Eric Chavez types with whom he hopes to share baseball's stage.

``I just got my first baseball card from playing in the summer,'' he said after participating with Team USA. ``You look at that and, ... I don't know Don't know (DK, DKed)

if anybody else feels this way, the baseball card is the first thing you want as a kid. The heck with the major leagues, you just want the baseball card.''

It sure beats the heck out of flashing that SAG card.
