CAISO Anticipates Limits on Power Supply as Temperatures Heat Up in California; Pacific Gas and Electric Company and CAISO Urge Customers to Conserve.News Editors/Energy & Utilities Writers SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2000 As temperatures begin to rise in California and across the western United States Noun 1. western United States - the region of the United States lying to the west of the Mississippi River West Santa Fe Trail - a trail that extends from Missouri to New Mexico; an important route for settlers moving west in the 19th century , the California Independent System Operator (CAISO CAISO California Independent System Operator ) is projecting high electricity demand throughout the state for the early part of next week. Recent upgrades of Pacific Gas and Electric Company's distribution system ensure the utility's facilities are prepared to handle higher temperatures and increased demand for electricity. Still, just like strong winds and falling trees can affect power lines and poles in the winter storm season, high temperatures can occasionally beat heat-sensitive facilities such as transformers and substations. The company launched a conservation awareness campaign in May to encourage customers to reduce their energy usage on hot days.
