CAERE CORP. EXPANDS PRODUCT LINE, ENTERS NEW MARKETS; TECHNICAL ADVANCES AND STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS FUEL EXPANSION EFFORTS
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere(R) Corp. (NASDAQ: CAER) this week announced two new products that further mark the company's advance into new markets and technologies. PageKeeper(TM) is an advanced IBM PC and compatible image and information management program and Image Assistant(TM) is a color image editor designed for both Macintosh and IBM PC and compatible business users. PageKeeper and Image Assistant follow closely on the heels of Caere's announcement of FaxMaster, announced in June and now available from Caere's worldwide network of computer resellers. The first complete fax software product, FaxMaster sends, receives, OCRs and compresses fax images.
"These new products are the culmination of years of technical research and refinement," said Larry Miller, Caere's vice president of marketing. "Our goal with PageKeeper, Image Assistant and FaxMaster is to provide users with capabilities that they have wanted for their computers but haven't had available because of technical or product limitations."
As the recognized worldwide leader in optical character recognition (OCR), Caere has been directing its efforts in the last few years to growing the market for OCR. Working with leading scanner manufacturers, Caere now provides trial versions of OmniPage Professional and OmniPage Direct with scanners from Hewlett-Packard, Microtek and Apple. Caere's Typist Plus Graphics(TM) product, a hand-held scanner specially designed for OCR that was first introduced in 1990, has provided quality OCR for a considerably broader market at a new, lower price point.
"In an effort to sustain our company's growth, we will continue to offer our customers breakthrough desktop information products," says John Migliore, Caere's executive vice president and chief operating officer. "Our strategy remains to identify these desktop markets, enter them aggressively, creatively combine our technology and marketing expertise while reinforcing this effort with key strategic partnerships."
 New Technologies for New Markets
Each of Caere's new products depends on one or more of the new technologies to come out of Caere's research and development efforts in the last year. Key to both FaxMaster and PageKeeper is Caere's new SuperCompression(TM) technology. Caere's industry leading recognition algorithm, which recently received Patent No. 5,340,431 from the United States Patent Office, divides the pages into text and non-text regions. The SuperCompression technique then applies proprietary compression routines, as appropriate, tressed, or even retained at all, saving a tremendous amount of space. This same technology allows PageKeeper to bring image management to the desktop by reducing storage requirements by a factor of 50:1 over the uncompressed size of the original document image. Caere SuperCompression also allows FaxMaster to make computer receipt of faxes practical by reducing the size of the incoming fax images up to 15 times beyond the CCITT standard compression technique.
FaxMaster and PageKeeper also share Caere's new Neural Net OCR engine, AnyFax(TM), specially developed to recognize low-resolution faxes. AnyFax is the first commercial application of neural nets for OCR. The self-learning element of neural nets fits naturally with Caere's established expert system approach to OCR, resulting in reliable recognition of standard mode faxes for the first time. In a separate announcement this week, Caere also announced that it has signed a strategic alliance in which it will provide AnyFax technology to Delrina Technology Inc., makers of the award-winning WinFax PRO(TM) fax software.
A combination of Expert Systems and Advanced Memory Modeling has allowed Caere's new color image editor, Image Assistant, to make the heretofore daunting task of photo image editing easy enough for office professionals who want to add color to their presentations or in-house brochures. Working in a fully transportable color space, Caere has become the first company to ship a world-class image editing product in both the PC and Macintosh environments.
"The pace and quality of Caere's recent technologies and products are impressive accomplishments," said Steve Hess, vice president for Creative Strategies, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based international market research firm. "These new market segments build on Caere's longstanding technical and market strengths in the OCR arena and are a natural evolution into complementary markets. FaxMaster, PageKeeper and Image Assistant offer users substantial new capabilities in their respective product categories."
