CAERE CORP. ANNOUNCES INTELLIGENT INFORMATION MANAGEMENT SOFTWARE
FOR PERSONAL COMPUTERS; TECHNICAL ADVANCES BRING POWER,
INTELLIGENCE AND EASE-OF-USE TO THE DESKTOP
LOS GATOS, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere(R) Corp. (NASDAQ: CAER) today announced PageKeeper(TM), a new class of information management software that stores and intelligently finds information on standalone and networked IBM PC and compatible personal computers. PageKeeper combines significant technical advances in unattended input (optical character recognition and automatic keyword identification), data compression, intuitive search technologies and a simple visual interface to bring about a fundamental change in the capabilities of personal computer-based information management. Caere will demonstrate PageKeeper for the first time this week at Seybold San Francisco, Booth 424, Moscone Center.
"PageKeeper provides a more powerful means to search a document database based on its content than I've yet seen from any other vendor," said William Zachmann, president of Canopus Research, a Massachusetts- based strategic computer consulting firm. "Caere's text-indexing and retrieval engine is the first time I've seen anything comparably sophisticated on a personal computer. PageKeeper is way ahead of the software typically used for both CD-ROM and on-line text retrieval today."
 Overcoming Barriers
"With PageKeeper we are finally beginning to see capabilities emerge on a PC platform that until now have been confined to mainframe/minicomputer environments," said Ajit Kapoor, vice president of Image Management Strategies. True information management at a personal level has been hampered by a number of key factors: image storage on mainframes and minicomputers has required expensive optical storage media; manual input and/or keywording has been cumbersome and uneconomical; powerful, content-sensitive search technologies have required technical specialists; and, full-text search engines have lacked intuitive interface design and query ease-of-use. With PageKeeper's automatic keywording, special compression techniques, powerful search engine, and simple interface, true information management at a personal level is now possible.
"Page Keeper empowers today's business professional and sets a new standard in intelligent information management for personal computers," said Larry Miller, Caere's vice president of marketing. "Because finding the right information is so important, we designed PageKeeper to find useful material, not just words. With PageKeeper, you don't need to organize your information anymore -- you just have to ask for it."
 Automatic Input and Advanced Compression
A key feature of PageKeeper is its automated input. The software accepts information from disparate sources without requiring any manual entry of keywords. It indexes existing computer files on hard disk or network drives, printed documents scanned in, and notes attached to documents in the PageKeeper database. The resulting index provides the user with all the meaningful words in the document, rather than just selected keywords.
PageKeeper's built-in advanced optical character recognition (OCR), the same world-class OCR technology used in OmniPage(R), lets the user scan documents into a database and convert them into computer-usable text. The user can look at the scanned image of an article or copy the text into another application for editing or reformatting. Using Caere's specially developed SuperCompression(TM) technology, the scanned image can then be reduced at ratios of up to 50:1, allowing for functional storage on the desktop.
 Powerful Retrieval Techniques
PageKeeper's powerful search engine contains two new technologies that provide users with true value-added information retrieval. The software's Weighted Relevance Retrieval(TM) presents search results in the order of relevance to the original request, allowing the user to quickly and easily locate the most useful documents without having to wade through alphabetical or unsorted listings of all the possibilities. Once relevant documents are found, PageKeeper's Document Agent Search(TM) feature can apply one document like an agent to find other documents with similar information. For example, imagine a document concerning African elephants. With agenting, PageKeeper might find what documents are available on African mammals, ivory and elephants in general.
 A Dynamic User Interface
In conjunction with the software's sophisticated search techniques, PageKeeper also features a dynamic, intuitive user interface designed to give users practical information quickly. Unlike traditional list-based displays, PageKeeper shows actual thumbnails of relevant documents, allowing the user to easily access meaningful information. Color graphics show which documents are most relevant to a search and which are only slightly related. To provide further ease of use, documents can then be manipulated with familiar "drag-and-drop" functionality. In addition, a customizable button bar lets the user choose icons for most commonly performed tasks.
 Integrated Information-Sharing Capabilities
PageKeeper's integrated information-sharing features allow users to easily share relevant information with others in their workgroup. Anyone on a network can share information either by providing access to the database or by mailing documents, annotations or messages via PageKeeper's built-in e-mail feature. For example, documents such as articles in progress or resumes can be routed with annotations. Because PageKeeper stores and retrieves information intelligently, routing can be done seamlessly with no need to learn specialized filing systems or hierarchies used by others.
Users can export information in popular graphics or word processing file formats for additional processing. In addition, if a user only needs specific parts of a document, text and graphics can be copied to the Windows Clipboard and transferred directly into other applications. For example, a user can copy market analysis text and a table of statistics from a research report into the Clipboard and later insert them into a business plan.
 System Requirements
PageKeeper requires Windows 3.1, a '386/33mhz or higher computer, 4MB RAM, and a VGA monitor.
 Pricing and Availability
PageKeeper's suggested U.S. retail price is $895. A five-user license is available for $1995. Shipping in the fourth quarter, it will be available from Caere's worldwide network of computer resellers that includes personal computer and office superstores, computer dealers and mail order. To locate the nearest Caere dealer, interested parties should call Caere directly at 800-535-7226.
