CAERE CORP. ANNOUNCES FAXMASTER SERVER: SHARED FAX SOFTWARE FOR WORKGROUPS

 CAERE CORP. ANNOUNCES FAXMASTER SERVER:
 SHARED FAX SOFTWARE FOR WORKGROUPS
LOS GATOS, Calif., Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Caere Corp.(R) (NASDAQ: CAER) today announced FaxMaster Server(TM), a new fax software product designed for workgroup and small business faxing. The software provides a simple, economical way to automate computer-based faxing for groups of up to 25 users. FaxMaster Server provides fax board and phone line sharing, centralized fax management, job queuing and manual routing of inbound faxes.
FaxMaster Server is an extension of Caere's FaxMaster(TM) fax/OCR package for Windows-compatible personal computers. FaxMaster provides integrated fax send, receive, recognize (OCR) and compress capabilities to individual users, allowing them to easily transmit, edit, store, share and print faxes electronically. Now, FaxMaster Server brings these same benefits to workgroups and small networks.
"With FaxMaster Server, Caere becomes the first PC fax software provider to introduce an economical shared fax solution," said John Dunkle, president of the market research and consulting firm Workgroup Technologies (Hampton, N.H.). "Let's face it -- the world is going networks. Now, even small businesses can automate what has become a very fundamental business communications tool."
To date, there have been two less than adequate choices for deploying computer-based fax throughout a small business, workgroup or department. The first option has been to purchase stand-alone fax software, a fax modem and a dedicated phone line for each employee that wanted to send and receive faxes from the desktop. This solution required a per-user investment of more than $500 and significant MIS support for installation and maintenance of each user's fax hardware. A second alternative has been to invest in a relatively expensive network fax hardware/software solution for high-volume faxing across an entire company. While powerful, these offerings cost in excess of $15,000 and represent "overkill" for the small workgroup.
"FaxMaster Server fills the gap between single user and enterprise- wide faxing by enabling a small workgroup to share a fax modem and phone line yet still manage fax traffic on the network," said Vallance Cole, senior product marketing manager for Caere Corp. "It also provides our single-user fax customers with an easy and cost-effective growth path for bringing the benefits of computer fax to the rest of the office."
Ease of Use and Complete Functionality
FaxMaster Server runs on a dedicated PC linked to local Windows-compatible personal computers running FaxMaster. The server software installs easily, with just one dedicated phone line and a CAS- compatible fax board. Using FaxMaster Server, a workgroup administrator can manage inbound and outbound fax logs, assign priorities to individual users, route incoming faxes and control security access among users. Incoming faxes can be screened; priority faxes can be immediately printed or distributed, while those that constitute "junk fax" can be easily discarded. Outbound faxes are automatically queued at the server, freeing up individual users to continue their work while fax transmission occurs.
FaxMaster Server's architecture also minimizes the need for support from administrators or MIS departments: fax hardware is installed only on the server computer, rather than as a separate board at each workstation. And unlike many network fax solutions, users also have real-time access to the status of their outbound and inbound fax documents using FaxMaster's LogViewer(TM).
Individual users retain the full power of FaxMaster at the desktop. FaxMaster provides direct faxing from a "fax button" that inserts itself into virtually all Windows applications. It also lets users automatically receive and convert faxes to text using Caere's AnyFax(TM) OCR technology and compress fax images up to 33 times over their original size using Caere's SuperCompression(TM) technology.
 A Scaleable Fax Solution
FaxMaster Server is part of Caere's comprehensive strategy to provide a scaleable fax solution: FaxMaster for individual users, FaxMaster Server for small workgroups and FaxMaster plus LanFax(TM) from Alcom Corp. (Mountain View, Calif.) for large workgroups. Caere and Alcom recently announced a technology agreement to co-market FaxMaster with Alcom's high-volume network fax offering.
"With FaxMaster Server, Caere continues to extend its technology beyond the individual user into new workgroup applications," said John Migliore, Caere executive vice president and chief operating officer." As NetWare(TM) and Windows for Workgroups(TM) continue to gain acceptance in the office, Caere is well-positioned to leverage the growth of these and other workgroup-operating environments."
 System Requirements
FaxMaster Server requires a dedicated 286 or above personal computer with MS-DOS5.0 or above, 1MB RAM, an 80 megabyte hard drive and a CAS- compatible fax board. FaxMaster Server runs on most popular LAN operating systems including Novell NetWare and NetWare Lite, Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups and Artisoft's LANtastic. Individual FaxMaster users require a 386 computer or above running Windows 3.1, 4MB RAM and a Windows-compatible pointing device.
 Pricing and Availability
Caere is moving aggressively to proliferate computer-based faxing in both desktop and workgroup environments. FaxMaster Server will retail for $695, with Caere offering a specially priced "Workgroup in a Box," which includes FaxMaster Server and a five license version of FaxMaster, for $995. FaxMaster will also be available in 5, 10, and 20 packs at $695, $1195, and $1995, respectively. Caere has reduced the suggested retail price of single-user FaxMaster to $149 to drive similar economies in the single-user fax software category. FaxMaster Server will be available for shipments in the fourth quarter.
